Creating Book Covers

This group of activities intends to develop in the children a criteria for the valorization of illustrated books, to help them reflect upon the association between texts and images and to generate a space suitable for artistic expression.

•  For a week, read to your students one story a day. After each reading, take time to discuss informally what has been read, in the fashion of someone that has just left the movie theatre and shares their first impressions on the film.

•  Later on, divide the students in small groups and suggest that they become publishers for a day by designing a book cover for each book that has been read. Tell them that the publishing houses are not satisfied with the current covers and they want to modify them to reflect the content of the book and to draw readers in.

• Before beginning, tell the children to visit the Reading Corner and look into the current covers. You may use the following Guide to analyze Book Covers. It is important to carry out this activity in a casual manner, without the need to, for instance, write down questions and answers.

•  After the analysis, have the children share their thoughts. Tell each group to select one of the books and put together their own cover, taking into consideration what has just been discussed.

• Display the children’s work in the classroom.

 

What information does the cover contain?

What letter size has each text? Why are some lines bigger than others?

What characteristics do the illustrations have? What style are they, what colors?

Which images have been selected for the cover? What do they represent? Is it a character, a scene, a setting?

Why was that image selected?

How does a book cover influence your interest as a reader?

Creación de portadas

Esta actividad permite construir junto con los niños criterios para la valoración de los libros ilustrados, ayudarlos a reflexionar sobre las articulaciones entre los textos y las imágenes y generar espacios de expresión artística, utilizando diferentes técnicas.

- Durante una semana lea con sus alumnos un cuento cada día. Luego de cada lectura, reserve un espacio para conversar informalmente sobre lo leído, como quien sale del cine y comenta sus impresiones sobre una película.

- Luego, organice al curso en grupos pequeños y propóngales convertirse en diseñadores de las portadas de los textos leídos. Propóngales imaginar que las editoriales no están conforme con las portadas de los libros y desean modificarlas para que reflejen el contenido de la historia y tienten al lector para leerla. Ellos serán los encargados del cambio.
- Antes de comenzar el trabajo, propóngales visitar el Rincón de Lectura y analizar cómo están elaboradas las portadas existentes. Puede utilizar la siguiente Guía para analizar portadas de libros. Es importante realizar esta actividad de manera informal sin necesidad de plantear, por ejemplo, preguntas y respuestas para escribir.

- Luego del análisis comparta las reflexiones del grupo sobre las portadas analizadas.- Proponga que cada grupo seleccione uno de los cuentos leídos y arme su propia portada, teniendo en cuenta los aspectos discutidos.

- Oganice una muestra de las producciones de los niños.

Guía para analizar portadas de libros

• ¿Qué información figura en la portada del libro?
• ¿Qué tamaños de tipografía tiene cada texto incluido en la portada? ¿Por qué algunos textos están escritos con tipografía más grande que otros?
• ¿Qué características tienen las ilustraciones? (Estilo de ilustración, uso de colores).
• ¿Qué imágenes se seleccionaron para incluir en la portada? ¿Qué representan? Por ejemplo, un personaje, una escena del cuento, un escenario, etc.
• ¿Por qué creen que seleccionaron esa imagen?
• ¿Cómo influye la portada del libro en su interés como lectores en leerlo?
